Chiacchiere di Nonna | Nonna’s Fried Cookies

Chiacchiere are crispy and delicious Italian cookies my Nonna always made during the holidays. For our family, the Thanksgiving feast was the start of a wonderful month to come filled with wonderful food, cheer, family time, and so many precious memories we made in the kitchen and at the dining room table. Nonna would put up a card table between the kitchen and the dining draped with a beautiful lace cloth covered with platters of homemade cookies, cannolis, chiacchiere, and cakes. I remember as a child, the grown up’s would allow me to have a small sip of Italian sparkling wine with dessert. I recommend serving a chilled glass of CorteAura Franciacorta with these amazing sweet ribbons of joy.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups Flour

3 tablespoons Butter, at room temperature

1 tablespoon Sugar

1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder

1 Egg

1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

3 tablespoons White White

1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt

Vegetable Oil, for frying

Powdered Sugar, to sprinkle on top

Directions

Whisk the egg in a large mixing bowl until frothy. Whisk in wine, vanilla, and sugar until well incorporated. Fold in the flour, baking powder, salt, and butter. Knead the mixture together until it forms a smooth ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Sprinkle a work surface lightly with flour and roll out the dough until it is quite thin but can be cut and handle without breaking. Cut the dough into 1 1/2-2 inch wide ribbons. (You can tie the ribbon strips into a knot if you like.) Prepare a deep fryer or frying pan with adequate oil, 3-4 inches. Once the oil is piping hot, carefully add the ribbons taking care not to overcrowd them. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle lightly with honey. Serve immediately with a glass of bubbles! Auguri!!
